You've Got a Friend

It's been thirty years since David Anthony last saw Lori Gold, thirty years since she broke his heart, thirty years since he'd told her she'd always have a friend. With her husband murdered and her son in jail, accused of the crime, Lori calls David, the good man whose love she spurned. David is a journalist, not a detective. He's recovering from the death of his wife and is trying to help his teenage daughter recover from a traumatic car accident. Lori lives 3000 miles away. His promise to her was made thirty years ago, but it was a promise. It is clearly her darkest night. He packs a bag and heads to the airport.

Inspiration

Image 1

The central idea for You’ve Got a Friend has been with me for almost as long as the song has been around. The story of a man getting a call from a long lost girlfriend percolated for years. I knew that the call from his ex would come at an inconvenient time and that she had gotten into an abusive relationship. Parenthood took precedence over fiction, but eventually the must would not be denied. The book began to take shape when I realized the story could be a mystery, and when the first two “sentences” came to me—unbidden—early one morning while I was walking my dog. Here they are: “Some voices you can’t forget, even after 30 years. Especially if the voice belongs to someone who broke your heart.” I hope you like where they lead.

You’ve Got a Friend is told from the viewpoint of a 55-year old man. I liked creating David, but the character that most intrigued me and haunted my dreams was his teenage daughter Diana, so I decided to giver her a book of her own - Something to Hide.   After the Fox continues Diana's adventures.
Invasive Species was inspired by three trips to Costa Rica, and Spelling was inspired by children.
